I’m like an old dog—loyal to a fault when it comes to those I like, love and respect. I’ll fight to the finish for them and support them the distance. Same way with my characters. Of course, some characters I like better than others, and some I grow to admire as they develop into more likeable “people”—like Patrick for example. But how can anyone not adore Faith? So therefore, I’d like for her to stick around awhile longer, which is why she will join us in the third book, not as the main character, but her role will be significant. Over dinner Patrick talked more than he had in the last two and half months. “I still can’t believe it” he kept saying.
Sue decided when he didn’t mention anything about her going to college near Notre Dame that she would broach the subject. “Patrick, you know it is too late in the year for me to apply to a major university like Notre Dame for the fall semester. So I think I’ll go talk to the career counselor at the college tomorrow between classes and see what the entrance requirements are at nearby small colleges.
Patrick’s expression turned serious. “I’ve been thinking, Sue. Maybe you should go to a university near here so you are not too far from Alice. I’ll be really busy the first semester at Notre Dame. Driving along Highway 100 in deep South Texas between South Padre Island and Harlingen there is not a tremendous amount of pretty scenery except in the spring when the yuccas are showing off their beautiful white, frothy blooms.
Settings are the easiest for me to describe in my books because I try to weave in places I have actually visited and studied. She ordered the small catfish platter with fries and hush puppies.
“Okay, here goes. I’ll take the large order with coleslaw on the side. And would you bring us another beer and wine, please?”
When the waiter brought the food, it was so heaped with small, crisp filets of fish that a couple fell off on the table.
“Why didn’t you tell me this was going to be so big,” Patrick asked with his eyes wide with surprise.
