Everyone has heroes or sheroes as I like to say, and Maxine is one of mine—Maxine, as in the philosopher-cartoon person. She and I share a strikingly similar sense of humor. Basketball season was once again a flurry of activity and Patrick was excited because he was playing really well. Although his grades were not faring the same, he was managing to keep them high enough for his scholarship to remain intact. Yesterday being Mother’s Day was a special occasion for many, but like other specific days, they are often bittersweet, and for various reasons. Those of us who have had wonderful mothers who have passed away usually have a lump in our throats for most of the day. When Sue met Patrick at the airport in Dallas the last week of August, he smothered her with kisses and gave her a tiny box. His plan had been to save the gift until dinner but he was too anxious to wait. Curious, Sue nervously removed the wrapping and opened the package. Inside she found a small, gold ring with a note in Patrick’s handwriting that simply read: Promise me! Immediately she began to cry.
“Hey, now don’t do that. Don’t you like it?” he asked, worriedly.
“I love it and I love you,” she answered.
