Fall is fast upon us, which was obvious by the beautiful harvest moon shining so brilliantly not long ago. I’m not complaining because I am tired of hot weather, and I welcome some cool, crisp air. But summer is good for me in one respect—it allows me an excuse to write, write, write! By the end of September, Patrick was thoroughly immersed in his studies. When the phone rang, he jumped. It rarely rang and he had considered not even having it connected, but decided it was a good idea in case someone from his family needed to get in touch with him quickly.

As I mentioned in last Monday’s blog, I didn’t write Coyote Smart because I wanted to make a political statement about illegal immigration. However, I think it will be obvious in the book that first, I abhor the human smugglers because of their callous and ruthless behavior, and second because I believe that we must secure and seal the borders for a number of reasons, not the least of which is national security. Arriving back in Rome during the second week of August, Patrick was surprised that it seemed deserted.
“Where is everyone?” he asked the manager of the small apartment building where he would be staying. The gentleman smiled and spoke in broken English, “Holiday Ferŕagosto–people go from heat.”
