Everyone has heroes or sheroes as I like to say, and Maxine is one of mine—Maxine, as in the philosopher-cartoon person. She and I share a strikingly similar sense of humor. I just wish mine were syndicated!! My friends email me cartoon sketches and sayings from Maxine frequently, and now my male friends are sending me Marvin jokes. Marvin is the male version of Maxine. He is funny, but I don’t really want to admit it.
Maxine and I just think alike. I thought about this the other day when I was driving along in the afternoon with nothing but me and the highway. The dust was blowing, and I was bored, so I decided I would use the time wisely and call a few friends on my cell. And then it hit me—it was 1:30 and everyone I planned to call would be napping!!! Is that ever a sign of age or I like to think of it as hanging out with older people. I laughed out loud and thought that Maxine would have a wonderful cartoon about that.
Only a week before I had evaluated a Primrose school and between 1-3 o’clock all the kids took naps. It reminded me when I was in first grade and they made us take naps, and being an active kid I hated it. Now that seemed crazy. Who would want to miss a chance to take a little snooze after a nice lunch in a quiet dark room? Oh well, I hadn’t brought my mat.
Thinking back about seeing the little kids all lined up on the floor sleeping without a care in the world and then about my retired friends grabbing a little rest between lunch and happy hour, I realized in that minute how fast that time in the middle goes. It didn’t seem as funny now, but that’s just the way it goes on that little journey called life! Maxine, I need a boost!!
